Dear Friend:
We are pleased to share with you that Hernán Guaracao Calderón will address at the ICAS Summer Symposium 2003 with his lecture,
"The Latino-American Experience in America: Roles Leadership Play for the Community Development in the Societal Context" (ICAS Lectures No 2003-0809-HGC).
Hernán Guaracao Calderón was born in Colombia in 1960. Hernán emigrated to the US with his family in 1988, shortly after earning a Fulbright scholarship to pursue a Master’s degree in Journalism in the United States. He had previously obtained a BA degree in Communications from the University of Bogotá "Jorge Tadeo Lozano", and had worked as a reporter and editor in a daily newspaper in Eastern Colombia for 4 and half years.
Upon completion of his graduate work at the University of Iowa in 1991, Hernán came to Philadelphia . The following year, he started a 8-page newsletter, published once a month, that 1 year later became AL DÍA, a black and white Hispanic newspaper that joined the already crowded field of Spanish-language publications in the city.
To become competitive, Hernán expanded the circulation of the newspaper beyond the traditional Hispanic neighborhoods of North Philadelphia, to the entire city and the suburbs, including South Jersey and Northern Delaware.
As a trained journalist, he made AL DÍA the first one to introduce full color to the pages of a Philadelphia Hispanic newspaper, while enriching its contents by adding wire news services, national and international photo services and more local news.
As a publisher, Hernán received the business person of the year award in 1997 from the Latin American Economic Development Association (LAEDA). This same year the Philadelphia Business Journal chose him as the only Hispanic in the prestigious section "40 under 40", an annual supplement devoted to highlight young entreprenuers and professionals from our region.
In 1999 he was elected to serve in the board of the National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP), where he is now the Vice president.
Locally, Hernán serves in the Executive Board of the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau (PCVB), the Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Painted Bride Art Center, and the Red Cross.
He currently lives in the Meadowbrook section of Abington, PA, with his wife, Elizabeth, and their daughters Gabriela Andrea and Anna Felicia.
