We are pleased to share with you that Danny K. Chun will address the
ICAS Summer Symposium: The Korean Diaspora.
Danny K Chun was born in Seoul on February 9, 1962 and immigrated to the US in
1973. Danny, a graduate of Johns Hopkins University in 1984 with a BA in Political
Science and Philosophy, earned a JD from Fordham University School of Law in 1987.
Upon graduation from Law School, he was appointed as a prosecutor at the Manhattan District
Attorneys Office and served in that capacity from 1987 to 1999. When first appointed,
Danny was the first Korean American ever to be appointed as an Assistant District
Attorney in Manhattan. During the 12 years as a prosecutor, he worked as a homicide
prosecutor from 1992 to 1999 handling homicide cases and investigations. From 1989
to 1999, Danny worked as an Asian Gang prosecutor specializing in handling major
crimes invloving Asian organized crime activity. From 1997 to 1998, he also worked
in the Sex Crimes Unit specializing in all types of sex crimes. >From 1998 to 1999,
Danny worked as a Criminal Court Supervisor, supervising and overseeing numerous
junior prosecutors.
In 1999, he became appointed as a New York City Criminal Court
Judge by Mayor Giuliani as the first Korean American Judge in New York and was assigned
to Kings County Criminal Court in Brooklyn to handle various criminal cases including
arraignments and trials.
In 2002, Danny became the judge in charge of handling
all misdemeanor recidivists in Brooklyn, named "Operation Sportlight". Also, in
2002, he presided over the trial of pornographer Al Goldstein, the publisher of
now defunct "Screw Magazine".
In the fall of 2003, Danny became assigned as an
Acting Justice of New York State Supreme Court to handle various major felony cases
in Kings County.
In 2004, still as Acting Justice of New York State Supreme Court,
he became temporarily assigned to Kings County Family Court to preside over various
Custody and Visitation cases, Family Offense Cases and Juvenile Delinquency cases.
