Sino-U. S. Relations: Issues and Prospect
The Honourable Yuan Yuan Zhang, spokesman - Counselor, Embassy of the People's
Republic of China in the United States, will present his views at the
ICAS Fall Symposium, Room 210 Cannon House Office Building, Capitol Hill,
Washington, D. C. on October 13, 2000.
The major theme of the Symposium will be Asia's/Koreas' Challenges Ahead:
economic, international relations and security issues.
Mr Zhang, born in Harbin in China's Heilongjiang Province on November 19, 1950,
had his primary and secondary education in Xi'an and Beijing. During the
"cultural revolution" (1966-1976), he worked for nearly four years
on a rubber plantation in Hainan Island. In 1972, he was recruited by the
foreign ministry and sent to Canada to study as an exchange student. Upon
conclusion of the program in 1976, he formally joined the foreign service and
served successively as staff member at China's consulate general in Vancouver,
Canada (1977-1981), second and then first secretary (press) at China's U.N.
mission in New York (1986-1990), and counselor (congressional liaison) at
the Chinese embassy in USA (since January 1998). When not posted overseas,
Mr Zhang worked most of time at the ministry's translation and interpretation
department, serving at one time director of its English division. He received
an M.A. degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in 1995. Mr Zhang
is married and has one son.
