We are pleased to share with you that Helen-Louise Hunter will speak on "Inside North Korea Today: Kim Chong-il's Hopes
for the Future" at the ICAS Spring Symposium on June 21, 2001, in Washington, D. C.
Helen-Louise Simpson Hunter received A.B. from Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, an M.A. from Yale University
in International Relations, and a J.D. from Georgetown Law Center. She worked for over 20 years in the C.I.A. as an economist
and political analyst specializing in the world Communist movement and then later in the Far East. Her book Kim Il-song's North
Korea is based on research and writing that she did then. From 1979-81 Helen served as the Assistant National Intelligence Officer
for the Far East while Professor Nathaniel Thayer was the National Intelligence Officer (NIO) for the Far East.
After her mid-career switch to the law, she served as law clerk to two federal judges on the U.S. District Court for Maryland: the
Honorable Paul V. Niemeyer, who is now a member of the U.S. Court of Appeals (Second Circuit) and the Honorable Peter J. Messitte,
U.S.District Judge for Maryland. Before re-joining Judge Messitte as his permanent law clerk, Helen worked for five years as an
associate in the Washington office of the international law firm of Jones, Day, Reavis and Pogue- doing antitrust law in the health care field.
Helen-Louise Hunter is presently retired from the U.S. Government, concentrating on the publication of several other books. Praeger is
about to publish her book on the Indonesian Coup of l965, also written while she was at C.I.A. She is doing a little law work and is active
in various organizations dealing with Korean issues.
Thank you.
