Kak Soo Shin Professor and Director International Law Center Korea National Diplomatic Academy named ICAS Fellow |
Dear Friend: We are pleased to share with you that Ambassador Kak Soo Shin has been named ICAS Fellow , effective immediately. Ambassador Kak Soo Shin has served the Republic of Korea in many senior diplomatic positions, including ambassador to Japan (2011 – 2013), first vice-minister of regional affairs in the foreign ministry (2009-2011), and ambassador to Israel (2006 – 2008). Kak Soo has also served as deputy permanent representative at the Korean Mission to the United Nations, director-general of the treaties bureau, minister-counselor at the Korean embassy in Sri Lanka, advisor to the foreign minister, and director of the Japan division at the Asian and Pacific affairs bureau. He began his career in the ministry of foreign affairs in 1977 as assistant director of the international legal affairs division in the treaties bureau. In addition, Kak Soo has been active in academic affairs. Since December 2013, he has been affiliated with the Institute of Japanese Studies at the Seoul National University (SNU) as a special research fellow. He joined the Korea National Diplomatic Academy as a professor and director in charge of its International Law Center in November 2013. Past positions include instructor in the department of law at the Korea Military Academy (1979 – 1982), instructor in the department of diplomacy at Sogang University in Seoul, Republic of Korea (1981 - 1982), visiting fellow at the Asia-Pacific Research Center of Stanford University in the United States (1991-1993), and director of the Global Green Growth Institute. Ambassador Shin has written many academic and newspaper articles on various issues, including international law, Asian affairs, international organizations and North Korea. Kak Soo is a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the Korean Society of International Law, and the Korean Society of International Humanitarian Law. He is also a board member of the Community Chest of Korea and an advisor to the Citizen’s Alliance for North Korean Human Rights. Kak Soo graduated from the College of Law at SNU and earned an LL.M. in international law and an S.J.D. from the Graduate School of Law at SNU. He also majored in international law at the Department of Law at Tokyo University. Ambassador Shin delivered ICAS Lectures on November 17, 2005 at Philadelphia Bar Association International Law Committee Luncheon and University of Pennsylvania law School. Thank you. |
