John Merrill



John Merrill, ICAS Fellow, is a Visiting Scholar at the U.S.-Korea Institute, Johns Hopkins University. John formerly headed the Northeast Asia Division in the State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research. He has taught at SAIS, Georgetown University, the George Washington University, and Lafayette College. John has a Ph.D. from the University of Delaware, an M.A. from Harvard University, and a B.A. from Boston University.

He is the author of Korea: The Peninsular Origins of the War, 1945-1950 (1989); The Origin and Truth of the Korean War (2004), in Korean; and The Cheju-do Rebellion (1988) in Japanese. John has written numerous journal articles, reviews, and op-eds and he writes regularly for Nikkei Asian Review.
