Dear Friend:
We are pleased to share with you that Paul M. Uyehara will address "Preserving and Protecting
Our Civil Rights" at the ICAS Summer Symposium on August 1, 2009.
Paul M. Uyehara joined the Coordination and Review Section of the U.S. Justice Department, Civil
Rights Division in Washington, D.C. in September 2008. Paul works on administrative
complaints alleging discrimination by DOJ grantees; coordination of federal civil
rights enforcement; technical assistance, community education, and outreach; and
chairs the Enforcement Committee of the Federal Interagency Working Group on Limited
English Proficiency. He came to DOJ after 30 years of work in Philadelphia. Paul
was a senior staff attorney in the Language Access Project of Community Legal Services
for eight years, where he focused on language rights advocacy, improving program
accessibility for language minority clients, and representing limited English proficient
clients with consumer problems. He was a founding member of the National Language
Access Advocates Network (N-LAAN). Paul has also served as a lawyer and a paralegal
in other CLS units, and at Philadelphia Legal Assistance, the Consumer Bankruptcy
Assistance Project, the Philadelphia Law Department and was a law clerk in the federal
district court. He has practiced in the areas of consumer bankruptcy, mortgage foreclosure,
family law and landlord/tenant. Outside of work, Paul served as a commissioner on
the Philadelphia Police Advisory Commission, which provides civilian oversight of
the Philadelphia Police Department, from 1993 to 2003. He is also a past president
of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League, past governor
of the Eastern District Council, JACL and a former member of the national JACL board.
Paul earned a J.D., magna cum laude, from Temple Law School and an A.B. from Oberlin
College.
